Chapter 1: Matter Around Us
What is Matter?
Definition:
Anything that has mass and occupies space (volume) is called matter.
Examples
Water
Air
Wood
Iron
Human body
Oxygen
Characteristics of Matter
Matter is made up of tiny particles called constituent particles.
These particles have the following properties:
1. Particles are in Continuous Motion
The particles of matter are always moving.
Solids → Vibrate about fixed positions.
Liquids → Move freely.
Gases → Move very fast.
Example: Perfume smell spreads throughout a room.
2. Particles have Spaces Between Them
There is empty space between particles.
The space is:
Least in solids
More in liquids
Maximum in gases
Example: Sugar dissolves in water because sugar particles occupy spaces between water particles.
3. Particles Attract Each Other
Particles attract one another.
Strength of attraction:
Solid > Liquid > Gas
Because of attraction:
Solids have definite shape.
Liquids have definite volume.
Gases have neither definite shape nor definite volume.

Matter exists in three common physical states.
