Chapter 1: Matter Around Us

What is Matter?

Definition:
Anything that has mass and occupies space (volume) is called matter.

Examples

  • Water

  • Air

  • Wood

  • Iron

  • Human body

  • Oxygen


Characteristics of Matter

Matter is made up of tiny particles called constituent particles.

These particles have the following properties:

1. Particles are in Continuous Motion

The particles of matter are always moving.

  • Solids → Vibrate about fixed positions.

  • Liquids → Move freely.

  • Gases → Move very fast.

Example: Perfume smell spreads throughout a room.


2. Particles have Spaces Between Them

There is empty space between particles.

The space is:

  • Least in solids

  • More in liquids

  • Maximum in gases

Example: Sugar dissolves in water because sugar particles occupy spaces between water particles.


3. Particles Attract Each Other

Particles attract one another.

Strength of attraction:

Solid > Liquid > Gas

Because of attraction:

  • Solids have definite shape.

  • Liquids have definite volume.

  • Gases have neither definite shape nor definite volume.

Matter exists in three common physical states.

Representative Particles of Matter

Matter is represented by three basic particles.

1. Atom

Definition

The smallest particle of an element that retains its chemical properties.

Examples

  • He

  • Na

  • Cu

  • Fe

Noble gases exist as single atoms.


2. Molecule

Definition

The smallest particle of a substance that can exist independently.

A molecule consists of two or more atoms chemically bonded together.

Examples

3. Formula Unit

Definition

The simplest whole-number ratio of ions present in an ionic compound.

Used for ionic compounds because ions do not exist as separate molecules.

NaCl

MgO

CaCl₂

Formula Unit is Used For

  • Ionic compounds

  • Giant ionic crystals


Covalent Network Solids

Some covalent compounds do not exist as molecules.

They exist as giant networks.

Examples

  • SiO₂ (Quartz)

  • Diamond

  • Graphite


Classification of Matter

Matter

1. Pure Substance

Contains only one kind of representative particle.

Examples

  • Gold

  • Water

  • Sodium chloride

Pure substances have:

  • Fixed composition

  • Fixed properties

  • Sharp melting point

  • Sharp boiling point


Pure Substance is Divided Into

A. Elements

Definition

A pure substance made of only one type of atom.

Cannot be broken into simpler substances by chemical methods.

  • Hydrogen

  • Oxygen

  • Copper

  • Iron

  • Gold


Types of Elements

Metals

Examples

  • Iron

  • Copper

  • Aluminium

Properties

  • Conduct electricity

  • Malleable

Non-metals

B. Compounds

Definition

A pure substance formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements in a fixed ratio.

Examples

Water → H₂O

Carbon dioxide → CO₂

Sodium chloride → NaCl

Ammonia → NH₃

  • Fixed composition

  • New properties

  • Cannot be separated by physical methods

  • Can be separated chemically


Mixtures

Definition

A physical combination of two or more substances in any proportion.

Properties

  • Variable composition

  • Components retain their properties

  • Can be separated physically

Examples

  • Air

  • Salt water

  • Soil

  • Milk


Types of Mixtures

1. Homogeneous Mixture

Definition

Composition is uniform throughout.

Components cannot be seen separately.

Examples

  • Sugar solution

  • Salt solution

  • Air

  • Vinegar


2. Heterogeneous Mixture

Definition

Composition is not uniform.

Components are visible.

Examples

  • Sand and water

  • Oil and water

  • Soil

  • Granite
